BTEC Nationals in Health and Social Care use a combination of assessment styles to give students confidence they can apply their knowledge to succeed in the workplace and have the study skills to continue learning on higher education courses. The range of vocational assessments both practical and written mean students can showcase their learning and achievements to best effect when they take their next step, whether that’s supporting applications to higher education courses or potential employers.

In Addition

You can choose a range of course sizes, each with a clear purpose supporting progression towards a career or further study. This means students can keep their options open and be confident they are choosing the right course to suit their study programme. The new course content has been refined and updated so it better supports student progression, whether that is into higher education or to employment.

Course Structure

Level 3 Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care (equivalent to one A Level)

This course is made up of 4 units. 3 Mandatory Units and 1 Optional Unit

Unit 1. Human Lifespan Development – written exam

Unit 2. Working in Health and Social Care – written exam

Unit 5. Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs – internally set assignment

OPTIONAL WORK PLACEMENT OF AT LEAST 50 HOURS

One optional unit (TBC) – internally set assignment

Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (equivalent to 2 A Levels)

This larger course is made up of 8 units and builds on the Extended Certificate

There are 6 mandatory units and 2 optional units.

Unit 1. Human Lifespan Development – written exam

Unit 2. Working in Health and Social Care – written exam

Unit 4. Enquiries into Current Research in Health and Social Care – set and marked externally

Unit 5. Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs – internally set assignment

Unit 7. Principles of Safe Practice in Health and Social Care – internally set assignment

Unit 8. Promoting Public Health – internally set assignment

OPTIONAL WORK PLACEMENT OF AT LEAST 100 HOURS

Two optional unit (TBC) – internally set assignment

Moving On

BTEC Health and Social Care is a widely recognised qualification enabling access to a variety of courses in higher education e.g. nursing, midwifery, teaching, social work. Students can also seek employment in the care and early years’ sectors.
