Year 10 Work Experience

Despite the difficult circumstances currently, a small number of our Year 10 students still managed to complete a work experience placement this week over 4 days.  As one of their Year Leaders, I had the pleasure of visiting a few of them at their placements.  It was wonderful to see them in a completely different environment & to hear them all talk so positively about their experiences.  They are all enjoying their placements with some saying it has confirmed their future career paths for them.  For some it has made them think about what else they may want to do in the future, using a range of transferrable skills.  It made me feel really proud to hear the supervisors describing them all in such a positive way too.

As a school, we would like to thank those people who accepted our students on a placement in these challenging times.  We are incredibly grateful.  I would also like to say thank you to the team of staff at JOG who helped to set up & organise these placements.

Year 10 Leader

Below is a snapshot of one student who was lucky enough to get a placement in a theatre production company where they are currently staging a live event.

I have enjoyed being responsible for elements in the show and have loved seeing behind the scenes workings of live theatre.  I have had to adapt to different tasks each day. The experience has exceeded my expectations, and I am so lucky to have the opportunity to work on an amazing show with an absolutely lovely cast and crew. This has definitely made me know this is something I would love to be doing in the future.  I have learnt lots of key terms in the theatre industry such as preset (everything that is put in its right place before the show) and clearance (checking everyone is happy before the show starts). I have also learnt the amount of hard work that goes into producing shows and just how many notes are constantly being made for little improvements. 

This experience has been very valuable to me and I now have some experience of what goes on behind the scenes in shows. This is something I can apply in the future.

Virtual Summer Concert

The John of Gaunt School came together with a number of other primary schools in the local area to put together a virtual summer concert. Sadly a number of schools were hit with bubble closures so not as many were able to get involved and some groups had reduced numbers as students were isolating at the time of recording.

Our Year 7 singers met every Tuesday lunchtime this term to rehearse their song and performed Lewis Capaldi’s song Someone You Loved. It was a pleasure to work with these young singers, especially after not being able to sing earlier on in the year due to restrictions. We were really sorry that a number of our students missed out as they were having to isolate at the time of recording.

Wiltshire Music Connect will be releasing the whole virtual concert at the end of term, and we will share the link when we have it.

We look forward to all our musical groups resuming in the next academic year and will be in touch with further information in September of what is on offer.

Exam Results Support

The school careers adviser, Ms Amy Lynch will be in school on A-level and GCSE results days to support with any decision-making or changes in plans. You can also e-mail questions alynch@jogschool.org

The Work Wiltshire Team will also be available to support, their helpline will be open between 10am – 4pm on Thursday 12th August. Students can call to speak to the Education Employment Advisors on 01225 716890 or email – workwilts@wiltshire.gov.uk. A great opportunity for creative musicians, hosted by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO).  Monday 9 August – Friday 13 August (held on zoom). The week will be hosted on a work experience portal full of exclusive resources. You will also have the opportunity to complete your Bronze Arts Award and watch the livestream of a FREE Classical Extravaganza concert on Thursday 12 August at 7pm. The work experience programme will give you the opportunity to explore creative careers within the orchestra, including Marketing, Communications, Digital and Participate.
