NEWSLETTER 1 - 10th September

Dear all,

It’s the end of our first full week back with students and what a brilliant one we have had.

Firstly, we are so proud to see how quickly our Year 7 students are settling in. Within a week they have adapted to new timings, made new friends and started to get to know their way around the school. It has been wonderful to have so many conversations about their lessons and all the new experiences they are having. In addition, we are really pleased with how the school had adapted to our new Morning Welcome. Ensuring students are ready for the day with their planners and equipment allows tutor time and lessons to be purely focused on learning. Each morning they have also been encouraged with a positive message and a challenge.

Today most tutor groups have handed out the new school planners to students, the remaining ones will be given out on Monday. Homework in planners will start on Monday 13th September for Year 8, 9, 10 and 11. Next week we will be talking with Year 7 about homework ensuring they understand the expectations, they will start their homework on Monday 20th September.

Welcome Back and Well Done Year 10

The Year 10 team simply wanted to share the spectacular start all of our students have made not only in their first week back in school, but in the first week of their GCSEs.

Staff feedback has been overwhelmingly positive this week, and we as a team are exceptionally proud of Year 10 and the maturity they are showing.

The year group’s motivated and positive attitude to learning is most clearly demonstrated by the staggering 933 achievement points issued by 3pm on Thursday.

This week our leading tutor groups have been 10C, 10E and 10B with 173, 136 and 111 achievement points respectively, whilst our top 5 scoring individuals are:

Huge congratulations to these students but also to the whole year group for such a brilliant start, keep up the good work Year 10!

Year 11 update

We are delighted to see our Year 11 students already working hard this year.  We have been impressed by their positive attitudes & the resilience shown when adapting to the demands of Year 11, in particular the Period 6 sessions.

Our tutor programme has begun with students using online resources such as Tassomai and Hegarty.  We are also using resources provided by our Careers Adviser, Ms Lynch, to ensure our students are fully prepared when choosing their post 16 options.  We will also be looking at revision techniques & study skills in these sessions too.

We are excited about the year ahead!

The Year 11 Team

After the disappointing cancellation of the Ten Tors 2020 and 2021 Events due to COVID, our Year 12 "Ducklings" Team were deprived of their chance to participate for their silver medal, having attained the bronze in 2019 with a record time for JOG students.

We headed down to Dartmoor on the first Friday of the summer holidays, with an aim of re-creating a pretend "Ten Tors Event" (with a few small liberties taken with the rules). The weather fluctuated (as Dartmoor does) between disgusting and sublime and the boys set off on their 45-mile hike over the marshes, bogs and peaks of the North Moor.

The lack of training opportunities began to take its toll on the second day and after an impressive 30 miles on Saturday, and faced with baking sunshine on Sunday, most of the group decided to make use of the lovely outdoor tables of a nearby tavern for some refreshing soft drinks before heading home to Trowbridge for a nice meal as opposed to grinding out the final 7-8 miles. It was a lovely weekend, and I'll miss these guys - Thank you!
